The site of a former Target superstore in Lauderhill could become home to about 550 rental apartments situated across multiple buildings, according to its developer.
The store had been South Florida’s first SuperTarget when it opened in 2001 on the southwest corner of North University Drive and West Commercial Boulevard. The SuperTarget was larger than a regular Target, featuring wider aisles and a grocery store. The store became one of a dozen nationwide that were closed by the company last year amid declining sales.
Now, developer Doron Valero sees new opportunity for the 14-acre site at 7730 W. Commercial Blvd. “It’s rare to find this kind of acreage available,” he said. The plan is to “transform [an] empty parking lot into a vibrant place where people live, shop and dine. We are convinced this is the right thing to do.”

Valero said his partners at Estate Companies and MMG Equity Partners didn’t want more retail in a “market saturated with boxes.” He said he thought new housing would work well in an area where people could walk to Starbucks and CVS. Those businesses already are in the outparcels of the area, giving it a “semi-dense, urban feeling.”
“The retail is already there, we just have to fill in the gap,” he said.
Their official application will be filed at City Hall in June. The buildings could each peak at five stories. The developer didn’t elaborate about how many buildings would be proposed for the site.
County property records show owners for the 174,000-square-foot site paid more than $281,000 in property taxes last year. It was purchased in December by its current owners for $9 million.
